Spring at Southern Grampians Cottages

Every season is a great time to visit Dunkeld and to explore the Grampians National Park, however Spring is probably the best time.

There is no better time to strap on the hiking boots and head for the iconic peaks of the southern Grampians. Take on the mountain trails and enjoy majestic views from Mt Sturgeon, the Piccaninny and Mt Abrupt – generally in perfect weather for hiking, and with the added bonus of seeing the dazzling array of the wildflowers of the Grampians at their best.

Why not combine the great outdoors with one of life’s pleasures – fine dining with a glass of wine. Dunkeld is home to Australia’s award-winning Royal Mail Hotel, as well as the legendary 130 year old Dunkeld Old Bakery, featuring its sourdough breads.

Two major events are held in Dunkeld in Spring – the ‘3 Peaks Festival’ on 20 October featuring an outdoor market showcasing local wares and produce, with live music and a huge range of kids’ activities and entertainment; and the unique ‘Dunkeld Races’ held in the shadows of the stunning Mt Abrupt on 17 November.

Within easy driving distance you can visit the stylish and historic regional city of Hamilton (30km to the west) which boasts one of Australia’s finest regional art galleries and the William Guilfoyle designed Botanic Gardens. Penshurst to the south, at the foot of Mt Rouse, is steeped in volcanic history – revealed at the Penshurst Volcanoes Discovery Centre. A trip to Coleraine, further west of Hamilton, and its famous chocolate factory, can be interrupted by viewing two of western Victoria’s famous waterfalls on the Wannon River – Wannon Falls and Nigretta Falls.

Of course a trip north, through the Grampians, to Halls Gap (65km north) will allow you to explore the northern Grampians, with its waterfalls, stunning lookouts, walking tracks, zoo, wineries, iconic geological features, aboriginal rock art, and Brambuk, the National Park & Cultural Centre.

Whatever your activities, you will return to a comfortable, well-equipped cottage where you will be able to keep warm with the cosy heat of a wood heater (ask George to have it going for you!), or an electric heating option. You will stay warm in bed with quality quilts, electric blankets and extra blankets.
